Pet stores teach lessons

about loss: Buy the fluffy pup,

cute kitten. See the purchase

solely as fecund opportunity

to enhance life for a child.

Fail to see sadness

created by departure --

forever severing mother’s touch.

It's not simply the leaving,

more, love cut by distance --

abandoned one, heart pounding,

eyes bright in the new life of grief.

Once uprooted, puppies learn

to play, kittens, snuggle, purr.

That they are happy

is only our assumption.
